Monaco Added to 2027 F1 Sprint Calendar as Lando Norris Highlights Single-Practice Challenge

Formula 1 has confirmed that Monaco will host a Sprint weekend for the first time as part of a 10-Sprint schedule on the 2027 calendar. Lando Norris emphasized that compressing practice into a single 60-minute session dramatically increases the operational challenge and margin for error around the barrier-lined circuit.

Sprint Format Expands to Monte Carlo for 2027

Formula 1 has confirmed that the Monaco Grand Prix will host a Sprint event for the first time as part of an expanded 2027 schedule. The 24-round calendar features 10 Sprint weekends—an increase of four compared to the current campaign—incorporating a Friday Sprint Qualifying session and a 100km Saturday race into the tight confines of the Principality.

While the Circuit de Monaco is historically unforgiving and offers minimal passing opportunities during race running, the format shift alters the operational rhythm of the entire weekend by slashing on-track preparation to a single practice session.

The Setup and Execution Challenge

Under the standard weekend structure, teams utilize three one-hour practice sessions to calibrate ride heights, dial in mechanical grip, and build baseline tyre data against the track's evolution. With the Sprint framework, drivers will have just 60 minutes in Free Practice 1 before heading directly into competitive Sprint Qualifying on Friday.

Reigning world champion Lando Norris, who converted pole position into a Monaco Grand Prix victory in 2025, pointed out that compressing track time shifts immense weight onto historical baseline data and increases operational risk for the drivers.

"I guess the main thing is that means you've got FP1, [Sprint] qualifying on Friday—which is the challenge," Norris said. "You don't have as much time to build up to things so you're probably going to have to try and risk a little bit more earlier... because in Monaco when you go to that limit, game over."

Calendar Context and Upcoming Action

The reduction in setup time exposes teams to narrower operating windows, where a minor misjudgment in mechanical platform stiffness or steering precision against the barriers can compromise the entire weekend. The change aims to provide fans with competitive sessions on both Friday and Saturday while testing driver precision under immediate qualifying pressure.

The current Formula 1 season continues with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the streets of Baku from September 24-26, opening a triple-header with a Saturday race schedule.
