F1 Grid Divided Over Monaco Sprint Addition for 2027 Season

Monaco Added to 10-Race Sprint Schedule

Formula 1 has confirmed an expansion of its Sprint schedule for the 2027 championship, increasing the roster from six to 10 events. Among the venues adopting the alternate schedule is the Monaco Grand Prix, which will host a Friday Sprint Qualifying session followed by a 100km short-format race on Saturday ahead of the primary Grand Prix.

The structural realities of the Circuit de Monaco—defined by low cornering velocities, minimal track width, and virtually non-existent overtaking delta—have sparked divergent views across the paddock regarding whether the format fits Monte Carlo's confines.

Drivers Offer Contrasting Assessments

Lewis Hamilton expressed skepticism about applying standard sprint machinery to the Principality, noting that while an extra single-lap qualifying session adds performance value, the 100km race itself does not solve the circuit's mechanical procession.

"It makes no sense to me but I'm not making the decisions obviously," Hamilton stated. "We've already included the Sprints, which I think have really brought something new to the sport. But I think we've got to come up with something new for somewhere like that... a Sprint race is not the answer for it."

Mercedes driver George Russell offered the opposing technical perspective, emphasizing the shift in operational load across the weekend:

  • Elimination of redundant running: Replacing Free Practice 2 with competitive Sprint Qualifying increases track-action intensity on Friday.
  • Adrenaline over stint simulation: Single-lap commitments generate more dynamic load and driver precision under high mechanical grip demands.

"Sprint Qualifying is way more exciting than FP2, so I think on the whole it makes sense," Russell noted.

Paddock Reactions Ahead of Baku

Max Verstappen maintained an indifferent stance toward Sprint venue selection, stating his performance focus remains entirely on Grand Prix execution rather than short-distance points. Cadillac's Sergio Perez suggested the format could inject strategic variation into what has traditionally been a Saturday-dependent grid order, while McLaren's Lando Norris questioned whether more overtaking-friendly circuits should have been prioritized.

The paddock now shifts focus to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, where Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar is scheduled to return to competition following a three-race absence due to a wrist injury.
