Mercedes Accepts Blame for Antonelli Mechanical Failure at Silverstone

Mercedes has accepted responsibility for a wheel-shield failure on Kimi Antonelli's car that cost him a likely victory at the British Grand Prix. The failure and a subsequent track limits penalty dropped the championship leader to 16th, narrowing his points lead over George Russell to 25 points.

Mercedes Accepts Blame for Costly Wheel-Shield Failure

Mercedes has taken full responsibility for the mechanical failure that stripped Kimi Antonelli of a potential British Grand Prix victory, leaving the championship leader outside the points after a compromised final stint at Silverstone.

Antonelli was actively closing the deficit to race leader Charles Leclerc when a structural failure of his wheel shield occurred with 11 laps remaining. The aerodynamic and mechanical disruption severely impaired the car's turn-in capability under high lateral loads, forcing an abrupt loss of front-end grip and race pace.

Two Pit Stops and Track Limits Penalty

Uncertain of the exact origin of the handling imbalance, Mercedes brought Antonelli into the pit lane twice in succession. The crew initially suspected front wing damage before identifying and clearing wheel-shield debris during the second stop, rejoining him in 10th position.

As Antonelli fought severe understeer in the mechanically compromised chassis, he exceeded track boundaries and received a five-second time penalty for track limits. With the field condensed under a late-race safety car, the penalty relegated him to 16th place at the finish line.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed the team's responsibility and noted they are examining options to challenge the post-race penalty:

"It's on us. A car should not break. I don't think the ride was worse than any laps before. He couldn't turn any more. We haven't done the post-mortem for what's happened. It's just fury we have at the moment."

Video replays indicated the component sustained damage across the exit kerb at Copse Corner, though Antonelli stated his telemetry and line through the high-G right-hander were consistent with previous laps.

Title Standings and Russell’s Recovery

Despite managing a slow puncture earlier in the grand prix, George Russell capitalized on the late safety car by staying out, ultimately securing second place on the podium. The result reduces Antonelli’s advantage at the top of the Drivers' Championship to 25 points over Russell and 32 points over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

The Silverstone retirement marks the second non-scoring result in three rounds for Antonelli, following an energy store battery failure in Spain and an interrupted qualifying run in Austria.

Formula 1 resumes its schedule at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix on July 17-19.

The race-winning Ferrari of Charles Leclerc concluded its final stint with an estimated 13.8 percent tire degradation across its loaded lateral surface.
