Race control deployed the Safety Car on lap 48 after Max Verstappen spun out of fourth place at Stowe, beaching his Red Bull in the gravel trap. With laps rapidly dwindling, the unlapping procedure commenced at the start of lap 51. Article B5. 13.5 of the Safety Car regulations dictates that one complete lap must be run after lapped cars are instructed to pass the Safety Car. Because that unlapping process began on lap 51, the mandatory buffer required the Safety Car to remain out through lap 52, precluding any legal resumption of green-flag racing.
“The Safety Car period regulation, Article B5. 13.5, states that one lap must be completed following the unlapping procedure,” the FIA confirmed in a post-race statement. “This process was followed by Race Operations. The 'Safety Car In This Lap' message was displayed erroneously due to a software error.”
The anti-climactic processional finish marked the first full Safety Car conclusion in Formula 1 since the 2022 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Paddock Reaction and Title Context
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff endorsed the strict adherence to the rulebook, noting the contrast to historical controversies: “I would have preferred for this to happen in 2021! That was more important. But it's good that the regulations have been followed. Sometimes it doesn't give for the most exciting final... But this is a show for the sport. Show for the sport and not the other way around, so it's good that the FIA did that.”
Russell, who inherited second position after electing not to pit under neutralization while the Ferraris took fresh rubber, echoed the sentiment. Hamilton, resting his chin on his knuckles in the post-race room before offering brief assent, agreed with his former teammate's assessment that procedural consistency must supersede artificial grandstand finishes (even if the concrete wing of Silverstone's pit building looked ready for a sprint finish).
