Race Distances Reduced for 2027
Formula 1 Grand Prix distances are set to be trimmed from 305km to 290km starting in the 2027 season, the FIA confirmed following a meeting of the F1 Commission in London. The structural adjustment represents a reduction of two to three laps depending on circuit layout and lap length.
The shift in total running distance is directly tied to power unit energy management. Refinements to the technical regulations introduced for 2026 include an increase in maximum fuel flow rates. To balance internal combustion fuel consumption and power unit efficiency across a full stint, total race mileage is being recalibrated.
According to an FIA statement: "In line with the refinements to the Power Unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps."

Formal sign-off by the FIA World Motor Sport Council is required to codify the change into the sporting regulations, though approval is expected to be a formality.
Revisions to Session Timing and Hard Stops
The F1 Commission also agreed to structural adjustments governing session operations and weather disruptions:
- Removal of Three-Hour Window: The regulation capping total elapsed time from race start to finish at three hours (inclusive of red flags and suspensions) has been eliminated.
- Introduction of a 'Hard Stop': A fixed cutoff time will now dictate the absolute end of track activity on race day, ensuring grand prix events do not run past operational curfews.
- Two-Hour Racing Cap Maintained: The limit of two hours of green-flag, on-track racing remains in effect to guarantee maximum running time for trackside spectators and broadcasts during interrupted events.
- Free Practice Extension Flexibility: Race directors will receive greater latitude to extend Free Practice sessions interrupted by red flags. This provision was previously restricted to Sprint weekend formats.
Calendar Context
The regulatory updates come as the sport navigates the initial deployment of its 2026 technical reset, with the current championship continuing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
