The Intra-Team Dynamic Inside Mercedes
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged that George Russell found it difficult to process Kimi Antonelli’s sudden surge in form during the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Russell entered the year framed as the title favourite, but Antonelli altered the team's internal balance by securing five consecutive victories in the opening quarter of the campaign.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 ahead of the race weekend at Sepang, Wolff outlined how the 28-year-old British driver had to recalibrate his expectations when confronted with the immediate raw pace of his rookie teammate.
"He gets down. He's someone that's very emotional in a different way to an Italian driver as an example," Wolff said. "He gets down and it's difficult to cope, particularly when you have a 19-year-old coming into the team and it looks so easy... He has now settled into this reality of 'this is going to be really hard because he's so good'."
Mechanical Setbacks and the Baku Recovery
Russell's season lost operational momentum in May following an engine failure at the Canadian Grand Prix. Between Montreal and the August summer break, he managed just two podium finishes while Antonelli accumulated points at the front of the field.

A recent turnaround culminated in a lights-to-flag victory for Russell in Baku, reducing his championship deficit to 66 points. Wolff noted that Russell operated in "rocket mode" in Azerbaijan, re-establishing his technical baseline after months of chasing balance and track position.
Managing the Garage: Parity and Pre-Race Scenarios
With Mercedes positioned to take its first Drivers' Championship since 2020, Wolff emphasized that the team's operating structure relies on lessons learned from the Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg title fights between 2013 and 2016.
- Driver Backgrounds: Both drivers are long-term Mercedes junior proteges; Russell joined the program at 17, Antonelli at 11.
- Technical Parity: Wolff reaffirmed that aerodynamic and mechanical upgrades are delivered simultaneously to both sides of the garage to ensure equal opportunity.
- Scenario Planning: Briefings focus heavily on pre-race agreements to manage wheel-to-wheel engagements without operational interference from the pit wall.
As the championship heads into Sepang, Mercedes maintains full technical parity between both cars, leaving the remaining rounds to resolve whether Russell can overcome the 66-point margin or if Antonelli secures the title in his rookie campaign.
