Mercedes Boss Urges Caution Despite Dominant Lead
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has warned that unexpected “black swan events” could still derail Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 championship bid, despite the Italian driver opening up an 81-point gap at the top of the standings. Following consecutive victories at Monza and the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Antonelli holds the largest points advantage of his campaign with nine rounds remaining.
Antonelli took control of the Drivers’ Championship after winning round three in Japan on March 29 and has not surrendered the table lead since. The 20-year-old has accumulated eight victories so far this season—six more than any other competitor on the grid. His latest triumph in Spain leaves Mercedes teammate George Russell trailing in second place by 81 points, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris sit over 100 points adrift in third and fourth respectively.
The Mechanical and Mental Margin
Wolff emphasized that despite the mathematical cushion, the unforgiving nature of top-tier single-seaters leaves no room for premature celebration. The smell of hot brake dust and scorched carbon in the garage serves as a constant reminder that mechanical reliability and on-track chaos can shift a title race in seconds.

“There are black swan events, they can come and you’re losing something out of your hand when you didn’t think it was possible to lose,” Wolff said. “The way this kid is able to compartmentalise and be the young kid and then get into the car and be the mature racing driver... that’s why if Kimi says to himself, ‘I’m not thinking about the championship,’ he’s not thinking about the championship.”
Antonelli Remains Grounded Ahead of Baku
For his part, Antonelli has maintained a steady, measured approach, dismissing talk of securing his maiden world title early. Supported trackside by his father, Marco, and the Mercedes engineering crew, the Italian driver insists his focus remains strictly on execution rather than points calculations.
“It is great, but we’ve just got to keep pushing, keep delivering the results and just trying to do the best job I can whenever I go on track,” Antonelli said. “Because, of course, yes, I have a big lead, but you never know what can happen. I don’t want to overcomplicate things just worrying about championship or result. Just driving, doing my best.”
Next on the Formula 1 Calendar
The championship battle resumes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, running from September 24-26. The street circuit fixture will feature a Saturday main race and marks the opening round of an intensive late-season triple-header.
