Kimi Antonelli Limits Title Damage in Baku as George Russell Trims Championship Gap

Antonelli Manages Points Damage at Baku City Circuit

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli adopted a cautious, damage-limitation approach at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, nursing floor damage to recover from 16th on the grid to finish fifth. The result allowed Mercedes team-mate and race winner George Russell to cut Antonelli's lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings to 66 points.

Antonelli entered the race compromised after a crash in qualifying and technical issues that cost him significant running during practice. The 20-year-old Italian dropped a position at lights out, requiring 17 laps to break into the top 10 as he navigated a DRS train and an unfamiliar lack of straight-line pace.

"I was driving a bit like my grandmother today, just damage save mode," Antonelli said. "I didn't take risks. Before making a move, I was making sure that I could go for it. If I had the same pace as at Monza or in previous races, it would have been different... but today, I realised very early that first of all, it was a lot harder to overtake with a train of cars all in Overtake Mode."

Mechanical Strain and Floor Damage

Antonelli's progress accelerated as rivals made mistakes around the narrow Baku layout (where medieval stone fortress walls sit inches from modern crash barriers). However, his W17 sustained heavy floor damage during the first of two Safety Car restarts following contact with the Haas of Oliver Bearman amidst a multi-car collision.

The aerodynamic loss on the left side of the floor left the chassis handling unpredictably across Baku’s long straight and tight technical sections. Antonelli resisted further gambles, opting to consolidate fifth place rather than push for fourth against deteriorating balance.

Drivers' Championship Standings and Next Steps

While Russell delivered a dominant victory from pole position, the dynamic in the championship table retains a built-in advantage for Antonelli. Russell still faces a mandatory grid penalty for an engine change before the season concludes, offsetting a portion of the 66-point deficit.

Formula 1 continues its triple-header next weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix, staged at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
