Lando Norris secured pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking his first Sunday start from the front of the grid this season. The McLaren driver set the fastest time in Q3, capitalizing on recent upgrades to the MCL40 that have bolstered the team's performance at the Hungaroring.
The grid underwent significant changes following post-qualifying penalties. Lewis Hamilton, originally set for the front row, was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri, dropping the Ferrari driver to fifth. Similarly, Kimi Antonelli received a three-place penalty for speeding under yellow flags, moving him to seventh. These adjustments promoted Charles Leclerc to second place, with Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen occupying the second row.
Race Outlook and Strategy
Despite securing pole, Norris remains cautious about the 70-lap race, citing the strong race pace demonstrated by both Ferrari and Mercedes throughout the season. "We are in new man's land. It's our first time at the front, so we'll see what we can learn as we go," Norris noted, emphasizing the importance of tire management and a clean start on a circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
For Hamilton and Antonelli, the race now becomes a recovery mission. Hamilton, who has faced penalties in three consecutive weekends, will look to utilize the expected high tire degradation to facilitate strategic gains. Meanwhile, Mercedes teammates George Russell and Antonelli will start sixth and seventh respectively, with attention focused on their internal battle as they navigate the opening turn.
