“It's been a little while since I've been top of the timesheets in any session. I can't even remember the last time,” Russell said. “It's good to remind myself I've still got it and haven't forgotten how to drive. The break came at a good point.”
Antonelli Compromised by SQ1 Floor Damage
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had set the pace during Friday's sole practice session but compromised his Sprint Qualifying prospects early in SQ1. The Italian lost control on the entry to the final corner on his opening flying lap, skating through the gravel trap before recovering to the circuit.
While Antonelli navigated SQ1 and SQ2 comfortably, the excursion inflicted significant aerodynamic damage under the floor. Mercedes engineers noted an initial estimated deficit of 20 to 25 points of downforce. Despite structural repairs on the pit wall, Antonelli qualified fifth, two-tenths off Russell’s pole time.
“I had a couple of holes in the floor,” Antonelli explained. “When I came in, they initially said it was a loss of 25 downforce points. They tried to repair as much as possible, but definitely the damage was still there. I was struggling a lot in the low-speed corners.”
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff suggested that the structural repairs had stabilized the floor ahead of the final session, attributing the final gap to the fine margins across the field: “The gaps are so close and he made a little bit of a mistake at Turn 11, pushing too hard on the entry, and it can go quickly.”
