Grid Shuffle at the Hungaroring
The starting order for the Hungarian Grand Prix has undergone a significant revision following post-qualifying penalties for championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. Both drivers received three-place grid demotions, altering the complexion of the front of the field ahead of Sunday's 70-lap race.
Lando Norris (McLaren) inherits pole position, with Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) moving up to the front row in second. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) round out the new top four.
The Impeding Incident: Hamilton's Penalty
Lewis Hamilton, who originally qualified second, was penalized for unnecessarily impeding Oscar Piastri during the final moments of Q3. Stewards determined that Hamilton, having completed his own lap, was traveling at a significantly reduced speed on the racing line at Turn 1 while Piastri was on a push lap. Hamilton stated he was not informed of Piastri’s approach until it was too late, and Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur accepted responsibility for the communication failure.
Yellow Flag Infringement: Antonelli's Penalty
Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) was also handed a three-place penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags. The incident occurred at the final corner after Max Verstappen spun into the run-off area. While stewards acknowledged that Antonelli did lift off the throttle, they ruled that his speed reduction was "insufficient and unsustained" compared to his previous push lap. The penalty was mitigated from the standard five-place drop to three due to his partial compliance.
Impact on the Championship
The grid reshuffle adds pressure to the title fight, with Antonelli currently holding a 45-point lead over Hamilton and a 50-point cushion over George Russell. With the Hungarian GP serving as the final race before Formula 1’s four-week summer break, the tactical implications of the new starting order are substantial. Hamilton will now start fifth, followed by Russell in sixth and Antonelli in seventh.
