F1 Contingency Planning for 2027
Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the organization is developing alternative scheduling options for the 2027 season to account for the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran. While F1 typically releases its following-year calendar by this point in the season, the announcement for 2027 has been deferred until the autumn to monitor regional stability.
The conflict has already forced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix this year. Domenicali stated that while the primary objective remains a 24-race calendar, the sport has established contingency plans should the Qatar and Abu Dhabi events become untenable. If necessary, the 2026 season is currently structured to conclude within Europe.
Expansion and Market Development
Beyond immediate scheduling adjustments, F1 is actively evaluating long-term expansion. Turkey and Portugal are confirmed to return to the calendar, replacing the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort and the race in Barcelona. Discussions regarding future venues are ongoing with representatives from Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, and Argentina.
Domenicali noted that Hockenheim has initiated contact regarding a potential return to the German market, citing a new ownership and investment model for the venue. However, any new additions to the schedule are not expected before the 2028 season. F1 continues to prioritize consolidating its presence in existing markets, including China and Japan, before committing to further geographic expansion.
The current season resumes following the summer break at the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23.
