Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the 2026 season will conclude in Europe if the final two scheduled rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi cannot proceed as planned. The sport is currently monitoring the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with a firm decision deadline set for mid-September.
The 2026 calendar has already faced significant disruption, with the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. The Bahrain event has been relocated to Malaysia in October, leaving the final two slots—Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6)—under review. While these races remain confirmed on the current schedule, F1 leadership is evaluating the situation in coordination with other international racing series, such as the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which has already opted to remain in Europe for its season finale.
Logistical Constraints and Potential Replacements
Domenicali noted that "Brexit-connected documentation" limits the viability of alternative non-European venues for the season's end. While Italy's Imola circuit has been identified as a potential candidate, it has not been officially designated as a replacement. Formula 1 aims to maintain a 24-round schedule, though the current count stands at 23 following the loss of the Saudi Arabian event.
Addressing concerns regarding late-season weather in Europe, Domenicali argued that average temperatures in the region during late November and early December are comparable to, or warmer than, those experienced during the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Proposals for a second race in Las Vegas were considered but ultimately rejected to avoid competing with the NFL schedule and to protect the commercial value of the existing event.
