Issa Diop red card decision splits Ipswich and Nottingham Forest

Issa Diop was shown a yellow card rather than a red for his last-man challenge on James McAtee in Ipswich's draw with Nottingham Forest, after referee Thomas Bramall reviewed the incident at the pitchside monitor. Bramall judged that McAtee's heavy touch took the ball away from goal and that Leif Davis was covering, while Oliver Glasner insisted it was a clear red card.

Issa Diop red card decision: the Ipswich centre-back stayed on the pitch after a VAR review of his challenge on Nottingham Forest's James McAtee, a call that shaped the rest of the afternoon at Portman Road. Referee Thomas Bramall had not given a foul. He was advised to check the pitchside monitor for a possible denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and returned with a direct free-kick and a yellow card. Ipswich vs Nottingham Forest turned on that moment.

The Issa Diop red card review explained

Diop slid in on McAtee with just under five minutes of the second half played, missed the ball and made contact with the Forest player as he tried to break through on goal. Bramall did not blow his whistle. VAR then recommended the on-field review, and the referee went to the screen.

After watching the replays, Bramall announced a foul and gave his reasoning: "However, because the player knocks it to the right side of the goal, the final decision is direct free-kick and a yellow card to No.6." The wording made clear that McAtee's touch, not the contact itself, decided the outcome.

What the referee said during the review

The Premier League Match Centre posted an explanation on social media that included a line Bramall used while deciding, one he did not repeat in his public announcement: "It's a heavy touch, with the defender inside and he knocks the ball away from the goal - I'm going to go direct free-kick and yellow card."

The defender "inside" was Ipswich's Leif Davis, and his position became central to the argument that McAtee would never have reached the ball. Bramall judged the touch heavy and the direction away from goal; the question was whether either point held up.

Oliver Glasner and the angle argument

Nottingham Forest boss Oliver Glasner called it "a clear red card" and rejected the idea that McAtee's touch had taken him away from a scoring position. He argued that moving the ball to the right improved the chance rather than removing it.

"When you run against the keeper and you run straight, often the angle is not really good, so we are telling the players to sometimes create an angle and I think he prepared his finish by going a little bit half-right, so the keeper has to move and opens the near or far post," Glasner said.

Why Ashley Young defended the yellow card

Ashley Young, speaking post-match on Sky Sports, backed the officials. "McAtee isn't going to get there before Davis. He's quick," he said. "Plus, the ball is going through to the goalkeeper. I think the goalkeeper is going to get there as well."

Diop gave a similar account, saying he was "quite confident" he would stay on the field. "I did the tackle because I saw Leif coming and covering and also he pushed the ball wide and too far," the defender told Sky Sports. Co-commentator Lee Hendrie took the opposite view, calling Diop "really lucky" and questioning the referee's reasoning: "I do not think he has touched it away from goal at all."

Steve Cooper on a decision that splits opinion

Steve Cooper said the call would divide people. "Forest fans and staff and players will feel hard done by but if it had gone against Ipswich, they would definitely have felt hard done by," he said on Sky Sports.

There was disagreement over the process as well as the outcome. Gibbs-White and Cooper criticised Bramall for not making the decision himself in real time, while Ipswich boss Gary O'Neil praised how the review was handled.
