Chelsea injury update: Alonso starts without a striker
Chelsea injury update: Xabi Alonso opened without the injured Joao Pedro and finished with ten men. Tottenham won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, a second victory in six days under Roberto De Zerbi.
Alonso named no recognised centre-forward. Geovany Quenda, 19, made his first start on the wing. Morgan Rogers played through the middle instead of Danny Welbeck, who was not used as the central reference.
The shape produced territory without a target. Chelsea's attacks ended at the edge of the Tottenham box rather than inside it. Antonin Kinsky saved from Cole Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Rogers before the interval.

Tottenham's first-half control
Tottenham held 70 per cent of the ball in the first half. The possession sat in Chelsea's half for long stretches. Omar Marmoush wasted the clearest chance from close range.
Alonso kept the same line-up after the interval. Tottenham pushed higher up the pitch. James Maddison went off injured early in the second half, and Spurs held their structure without him.
The pattern was one-directional. Tottenham circulated the ball around Chelsea's block and forced repeated defensive sets. The home side dropped deeper with each phase, and the space in front of the back line grew.
Penders own goal and Palmer's dismissal
- Mateus Fernandes took a corner from Tottenham's right.
- Jan Paul van Hecke pressed Mike Penders inside the six-yard area.
- Penders punched the ball into his own net. Tottenham led 1-0.
Palmer had already escaped a straight red. He barged into Fernandes' head while the Spurs midfielder was kneeling on the ground, having stopped Palmer with a handball. Sky Sports' Gary Neville said Palmer had "lost his head".
The second yellow came for standing on Conor Gallagher in a tackle. Chelsea finished the match with ten men, and the game moved fully into Tottenham's control.
Mathys Tel and the second goal
Tel collected the ball deep on the left. He drove infield, cut inside and struck low into the bottom-left corner. The goal made it 2-0 and closed the match.
Tottenham had won only one of their previous 36 league visits to Stamford Bridge. The result delivers back-to-back wins within six days and eases concerns about a third season in the bottom half of the Premier League.
What changes next
Chelsea's problem is availability. Joao Pedro's injury removed the reference point at the top of the pitch, and Palmer's second yellow carries a suspension, so the attacking line loses another fixed position.
Tottenham's issue is load. Maddison's early exit in the second half adds to a squad that has now won twice inside six days, and De Zerbi's structure depends on the midfield holding its shape.
