Russell Commands Front Row in Baku
George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, converting consistent practice pace into a commanding Q3 lap to outqualify Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by eight-tenths of a second. The result positions Russell to capitalize on a major championship opening after standings leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a qualifying-ending crash in Q1.
Antonelli clipped the inside barrier entering Turn 1 during the opening session. Despite attempting to limp back to the pit lane, the structural damage forced a directive from the pit wall to stop the car on circuit in the middle sector. Antonelli will start Saturday’s race from 16th on the grid, giving Russell an opportunity to reduce his 81-point championship deficit.
Hadjar Impresses on Return from Injury
Behind the front row, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified third, marking his highest grid position since July's Hungarian Grand Prix. Starting alongside Piastri on the second row is Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, who delivered a standout fourth-place performance in his latest update and competitive return following a three-race absence due to a wrist injury.

The final Q3 flying laps were heavily disrupted in the second sector after Lando Norris suffered a front-axle lockup into Turn 3, triggering local yellow flags. The caution period compromised the final sector splits for trailing cars, most notably Max Verstappen, who had shown front-running pace earlier in the session.
Norris secured fifth on the grid despite the mistake, while Verstappen was relegated to eighth behind Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in sixth and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in seventh.
Williams Capitalizes on Upgrades
Williams converted their technical updates into a top-10 start, reaching Q3 for the first time this season. Carlos Sainz qualified ninth, maximizing an extensive upgrade package designed to eliminate excess chassis weight. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto rounded out the top 10.
