Kompany hospital discharge confirmed by Bayern Munich
Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl said on Wednesday. The head coach was admitted last week after collapsing at the club's training ground during a second-team training session.
Eberl called the discharge "the biggest and best news for all of us." No date has been set for Kompany's return. Bayern said he will resume his duties only after receiving medical clearance, which leaves the head coach's position on the touchline vacant for an unspecified period.
Sequence of events since the collapse
- Earlier in the week: Kompany missed some duties, including media commitments before Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal, because of a viral infection.
- Arsenal fixture: He was in the dugout for the 2-2 draw.
- Friday: He collapsed at Bayern's training ground during a second-team training session and was taken to hospital.
- Saturday: Assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge and was on the bench for the 3-1 win at Freiburg.
- Wednesday: Eberl confirmed the discharge to broadcaster ARD before the German Cup game against Magdeburg, which Bayern won 6-1.
Meningeal irritation named as the cause
Eberl said a meningeal irritation caused the incident on Friday. He said Kompany will now rest and take medication, and that he expects the Belgian back on the touchline at full capacity.

"Given the circumstances, he's doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."
"It's a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday," Eberl said. "He will now rest and take medication and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent."
Aaron Danks: no timeline on a return
Danks, who has led the team in Kompany's absence, said the discharge is a positive step but refused to attach a date to the recovery. He said the medical staff will continue to work with Kompany and that the head coach will rejoin the group only when he is fit and healthy.
"I still don't feel like there is any timeline on it. It's obviously a really positive step in his road to recovery."
"He gets to settle back at home now, be closer to his family, be closer to his home comforts but it's still really important that he takes his rest and he recovers. So there is no timescale on it. Nothing that I've been told and I've been informed."
Danks added: "Our doctors will continue to work closely with Vince and at the right moment, he will be back with us once he is fit and healthy to do that and we look forward to that day." He said he had not spoken to Kompany for a couple of days and described his health as "our number one priority."
Borussia Dortmund next for the Bundesliga leaders
Bayern, the Bundesliga leaders, face title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Danks is expected to remain in charge of the group until medical clearance arrives, with the club stating that Kompany's recovery takes precedence over any fixture date.
