Fleetwood Arsenal upset settled from the spot

Fleetwood Town beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The League Two club, sitting two points above the fourth-tier relegation zone, eliminated the reigning Premier League champions.

Conor Haughey struck the decisive penalty past Illan Meslier. Earlier in the shoot-out, Bruno Guimaraes saw his kick saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch, who had already denied Ben White and Martin Odegaard in stoppage time.

Mikel Arteta named a strong Arsenal side, with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz up front and Odegaard introduced for the second half. Meslier was chosen in goal ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga and made his Arsenal debut on the night.

Jay Lynch and the saves that decided the tie

Lynch's double stop in the fifth minute of stoppage time kept the score level and pushed the tie into a shoot-out Fleetwood had not rehearsed. His save from Guimaraes left Haughey, a 19-year-old centre-back, with the kick that ended the contest.

The match had already lost its shape inside two minutes. An unrecognised drone hovering over the ground forced a seven-minute delay after 90 seconds, with referee Michael Salisbury prepared to take both teams off before play resumed.

Fleetwood took the lead in the 21st minute when Aaron Loupalo-Bi outmuscled 17-year-old defender Marli Salmon and poked the ball past Meslier. Arsenal equalised five minutes into the second half, Gyokeres bundling in at the back post after good work from Cedach O'Neill, making his first start for the club.

Arsenal's night: Dowman sent off and chances missed

Arsenal's failure was mechanical rather than mysterious. Havertz missed two close-range chances in quick succession on 59 minutes, blazing over and then finding the side netting, and Lewis-Skelly could not finish from a few yards out six minutes later.

Jurrien Timber had earlier missed twice after Havertz headed a cross over the bar, and Piero Hincapie headed Dowman's free-kick over from close range in the 10th minute. Dowman himself skewed wide when played through by Salmon on 20 minutes.

The night turned definitively on 90 minutes, when Dowman was sent off for apparently kicking out at Harrison Neal. Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe described the decision as "really harsh".

Fleetwood nearly won it in normal time when Arsenal failed to clear and Will Davies forced a save from Meslier.

Matt Lawlor on Fleetwood's approach

Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor said his side had not practised penalties once. "I'm going to be honest, we haven't practised once," he told Sky Sports. "The lads took care of themselves. We have a 19-year-old centre-back that took the last one. I was a little bit worried when he was walking up, but Conor backs himself."

Lawlor framed the result as the biggest night in the club's history and pointed to the shape that made it possible. "We're not egotistical enough to think we're going to play the best team in the country and outplay them, so we had to ride our luck, deny space, deny options for them and we did that really well for the majority of the game."

"For those lads to take those penalties. They'll be in history now for the biggest shock in the history of the League Cup." — Paul Merson, Sky Sports

Merson added that Odegaard was the only Arsenal player to leave the pitch with Fleetwood's players admiring him, and that he could not believe what he had watched.

What the result means

Fleetwood, a non-league club as recently as 2012, have now knocked out the reigning Premier League champions and move into the quarter-finals. Lawlor was already looking past the celebrations, telling his players to enjoy the night while reminding them of a league fixture on Saturday.

For Arsenal, the exit removes a competition from a season in which Arteta had clearly wanted progress, and it came with a red card and a debutant goalkeeper beaten from the spot. The immediate question is how the squad responds in the league, where the champions' standards are measured weekly.
