Brighton title race hinges on Liverpool and Manchester City tests

Paul Merson says Brighton will be title contenders if they win at Liverpool on Sunday and at Manchester City on October 31. Brighton are third and have won their last four league games, though Jamie Carragher sets the bar at Champions League qualification rather than the title.

Paul Merson says the Brighton title race question will be answered by their next two Premier League fixtures: away at Liverpool on Sunday, then away at Manchester City on October 31. Brighton sit third in the table, behind only Man City and Arsenal, and have won each of their last four league games.

Brighton title race: the Merson verdict

The former Arsenal forward and Sky Sports pundit argued that the outcome of those two matches outweighs the fact that the season is still young. His test is blunt: win both, and Brighton stop being a story about overachievement.

"That is it in a nutshell: we'll see where they are after the next two games," Merson said. "If they go and win their next two games, I don't care how long has gone in the season, they are one million per cent title contenders. Then it's a different game. Then they are going to places expecting to win."

He was precise about the asymmetry of the pressure. Liverpool are "not setting the world alight," he said, but a defeat to Brighton would still be "headline news." Brighton, in his reading, are arguably the better team at the moment; the difference is the big-club mentality and the weight that comes with it.

"If Brighton go and get beaten by those two teams, no one will say a word. If they drew both, that would be amazing, but you'd rather win one and lose one."

His reasoning on draws is worth pausing on. A win and a defeat is worth more than two draws, and for Merson the points matter more than the unbeaten look: "You've got to win football matches." What he wants from the two games is a performance that gives a good account of Fabian Hürzeler's side, not merely a respectable scoreline.

The Anfield record and the fixture squeeze

Brighton have not won at Anfield in their last six visits in all competitions, a run that meets a Liverpool side yet to record their first league win at home this season. Neither record offers a reliable guide, which is part of why the fixture is being treated as a genuine measurement.

The City trip carries a second complication: the same two teams meet at the Etihad in the Carabao Cup fourth round three days earlier. Two games against the same opponent inside a week limit how much either manager can hide, and it turns selection in the cup tie into a signal about the league match.

Merson expects the fixtures to be uncomfortable for the champions and for Liverpool. "If I'm Man City and Liverpool, I don't really want to be playing Brighton," he said, pointing to how Brighton close down, play at a tempo and "suffocate" opponents — "it doesn't matter how good a footballer you are."

Jamie Carragher sets a lower bar

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports News earlier in the week, called Brighton "the story of the season" and compared their style to Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool: "really aggressive, really fast, really direct." On Monday Night Football he added that he prefers this version of Brighton to the one played under Roberto De Zerbi.

He stopped short of the title claim. "I'm not sure about title contenders, but I do look at them and think they are where they should be," he said, stressing the position is deserved rather than fortunate. His benchmark was Champions League qualification, particularly if fifth place carries a spot: "I think they should be disappointed if they don't make the Champions League."

Carragher's supporting argument is about the field rather than Brighton alone. He named Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham as clubs carrying question marks this season, which he said creates an opening for a side that has started as well as Brighton have.

What the next two results would tell us

Two defeats would not damage the season, but they would reclassify the start as a good run rather than a change in level. Two draws would preserve the unbeaten record and the table position while leaving the central question exactly where it was.

Four points or more would give Merson's argument material, and would put the "big team mentality" line under strain the next time Brighton travel to a ground where the crowd expects the home side to win. The table after October 31 will be the first version that reflects both tests.
