Lando Norris Questions McLaren Straight-Line Deficit Ahead of Singapore Grand Prix

Lando Norris is uncertain whether McLaren can resolve a power unit issue causing a two-tenths-per-lap straight-line deficit ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. Team principal Andrea Stella admitted rival teams may have taken larger development steps following recent defeats in Baku and Malaysia.

Lando Norris Questions McLaren Straight-Line Deficit Ahead of Singapore Grand Prix

McLaren Chasing Elusive Straight-Line Deficit

Lando Norris enters the Singapore Grand Prix facing mechanical uncertainty after an unexplained straight-line speed deficit derailed his recent outings in Azerbaijan and Malaysia. The British driver indicated that McLaren has yet to isolate the exact cause of a power unit anomaly that is costing him roughly two-tenths of a second per lap compared to teammate Oscar Piastri.

The drop in performance comes immediately after a dominant four-race sequence across the summer break, where Norris secured three pole positions and two Grand Prix victories. Recent weekends, however, revealed a stark shift in competitiveness. Norris qualified fifth at both Baku and Sepang, suffering a race-ending crash in Azerbaijan and salvaging only ninth place during an error-strewn Malaysian Grand Prix.

"The team are trying but I'm losing almost two tenths a lap. Two tenths a lap over 55 laps is just painful as hell. It's making my life pretty damn difficult," Norris said. "In Malaysia I could have done better. I can't just have that. That's not just an excuse. There are things I can do better and the team as well."

Paddock Development Race Accelerates

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged that while McLaren brought forward upgrade packages following their victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, chief rivals may have outpaced their development curve. George Russell claimed victory for Mercedes in Azerbaijan, followed by Max Verstappen securing a dominant win for Red Bull in Malaysia.

Telemetry data from the high-temperature Sepang circuit showed no clear mechanical anomalies in the baseline car assembly, yet the lap time deficit persisted across long straights where race-fuel deployment and power unit output dictate terms. Stella noted that high track temperatures and abrasive asphalt in Malaysia presented distinct setup challenges that may not translate directly to street venues.

"We don't see any anomaly in our data, but we have to acknowledge that potentially some competitors have developed their car with bigger steps than we did," Stella explained. "There are very specific conditions in Malaysia, so I think we should give ourselves more time. Singapore will give us a better answer."

What to Watch at Marina Bay

The upcoming round at Marina Bay presents a compressed technical timeline under the Sprint format. With only a single practice session before competitive running begins, McLaren must diagnose the straight-line loss without sacrificing aerodynamic efficiency around the tight 19-corner layout. If the power unit deficit remains unresolved, the team faces an uphill task defending their position against resurgent packages from Red Bull and Mercedes.
