George Russell Claims Baku Grand Slam to Cut Kimi Antonelli's Title Lead

First Career Grand Slam in Baku

George Russell delivered the most complete performance of his Formula 1 career at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing his first Grand Slam by taking pole position, leading every lap, and recording the fastest lap of the race. The victory narrowed the gap to his Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 66 points with eight rounds remaining in the season.

The win required extreme mechanical and operational discipline in the final laps (past the stone medieval ramparts and modern glass towers of Baku). Russell had to fend off Red Bull's Max Verstappen to take the chequered flag by just a tenth of a second—marking the smallest margin of victory in Formula 1 since 2002—after two Safety Car periods eliminated his earlier race lead.

Adapting to the 2026 Machinery

Russell entered the weekend trailing Antonelli significantly in the standings after struggling across recent months to adapt his driving style to the demands of the 2026 regulations. While Antonelli endured a compromised weekend—losing practice running to technical faults before a qualifying crash left him 16th on the grid—Russell extracted maximum pace from the car.

Antonelli recovered to finish fifth, but the weekend marked the first time since the season opener that Russell had decisively outperformed his team-mate across all competitive sessions.

"I think it's probably my first Grand Slam in Formula 1 and, for sure, the most dominant weekend I've had in my career, so that has come at a really great moment," Russell said. "There's been a lot of hard work to overcome some of the challenges, to adapt my driving style to suit this new car better... finally it's coming to me a bit more intuitively than it once did."

Championship Outlook and Upcoming Penalty

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix marks the opening leg of a congested schedule featuring six races across seven weeks. However, Russell's championship chase faces mechanical hurdles: the British driver must take a mandatory grid penalty before the season concludes due to an upcoming engine change.

Upcoming Race Schedule

  • Sepang International Circuit: Bahrain Grand Prix (Malaysia)
  • Marina Bay: Singapore Grand Prix
  • The Americas Triple-Header: United States, Mexico, and Brazil

Formula 1 returns to action next at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, which hosts the Bahrain Grand Prix for the first time since 2017.
