Christian Horner F1 return talk as Wolff rivalry cools

Christian Horner says Toto Wolff and Mercedes are finding life in Formula 1 "easier" without him, and expects the team to wrap up both titles within two weekends. He also addressed links to Ferrari, Alpine and Aston Martin, saying he is in no rush to return and would only consider a team where an ownership stake is available.

Christian Horner F1 return questions have followed him for the past 12 months, and he answered them with a shrug rather than a timetable. The former Red Bull team principal told Sky Sports News that Mercedes and Toto Wolff are finding life "easier" without him in the paddock, speaking ahead of the publication of his book Drive on Thursday.

The framing matters. Horner is not announcing a comeback, and he is not closing the door. He is describing a sport that has moved on without him while he decides whether any available seat is worth the travel, the scrutiny and the politics.

The Wolff rivalry and Mercedes' resurgence

Horner and Wolff traded barbs for a decade, a rivalry that peaked in 2021 when Max Verstappen ended Mercedes' run of seven successive drivers' titles. Red Bull then took the constructors' crown in 2022 as Mercedes slid into a difficult period, and the exchanges kept coming until Horner was sacked in July 2025.

"Sport needs rivalry. Toto and I had some great jousting over the years," Horner said. "There was never any malice behind it. It was all sporting and he's got it a bit easier at the moment, so he's probably finding life a bit easier without me there."

Mercedes are set to reclaim both the drivers' and constructors' titles this season, with Kimi Antonelli in line to become Formula 1's youngest world champion as early as this weekend at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Horner's assessment: "They've done a great job this year. They'll probably win the championship this weekend or the weekend after, so it looks a bit easy at the moment."

Horner F1 return and the Ferrari question

Horner has been linked with Ferrari, Aston Martin and Alpine over the past year but says he is in no rush. In an interview with The Times published last month, he said Ferrari were the only team he would return to the pit wall for without the ownership stake he has prioritised for any comeback.

He called Ferrari "the biggest brand in Formula 1" and "the dream", comments that fed reports team principal Frederic Vasseur could be replaced. Horner said he felt "very sorry" for Vasseur over the scrutiny the speculation created.

"It came out of an interview about a month prior to when it was released, and it coincided, I think, with comments that were made at the track with a couple of the drivers. It kind of ran away with itself."

He added that he was trying to be respectful to Ferrari by describing its different standing in the sport, and that having led a competitive team he understood the pressure such coverage creates during a hard stretch.

Sky Sports News understands Horner's business associations held talks with Alpine over buying a stake in the team earlier this year. He played down the chances of joining the Enstone-based outfit.

"You've got 11 teams currently in Formula 1. The value of those teams have all increased dramatically. If the right opportunity in a team existed, I'd certainly consider it seriously," he said. "Right here, right now, I don't see that at Alpine."

Aston Martin have been mooted as another destination, which would reunite him with designer Adrian Newey. In Drive, Horner writes about how his relationship with Newey changed before Newey left Red Bull in 2024 amid the team's power struggle.

Asked whether Newey could be blocking a move to Aston Martin, Horner said: "You have to ask Adrian that. Adrian's taken on a new challenge at Aston. It's a great team, it's a great brand. They've obviously had their challenges this year."

Time away and what to watch

Horner, 52, says he is not chasing a specific opportunity. "I did 404 races in succession," he said. "To have this time with family, to not be on the crazy travel schedule that F1 is at the moment. I'm just biding my time and seeing how things work out."

The practical question is ownership, not a garage. Horner has tied any return to a stake in a team, and on his own account no current opening matches that description. Mercedes, meanwhile, can close out both championships in Austin.
