Sepang Returns to Calendar as Bahrain GP Relocates
Formula 1 returns to the Sepang International Circuit for the first time since 2017, stepping in to host the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix. The event was shifted away from its original Sakhir venue in April due to regional conflict in the Middle East, setting up a demanding aerodynamic challenge across Sepang’s high-energy layout as the second leg of a flyaway triple-header.
The return to the 3.44-mile, 15-corner Malaysian venue places immediate physical stress on chassis platforms and tyre compounds. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the layout combines extended high-lateral load sections—notably the fast left-right sequence through Turns 5 and 6 and the sweeping load path of Turn 3 into Turn 4—with heavy deceleration zones at the ends of its twin half-mile straights.
Championship Pressure and Aerodynamic Demands
With eight rounds remaining in the 2026 campaign, the championship battle arrives in Malaysia following George Russell’s narrow victory over Max Verstappen in Baku, where the margin was less than two-tenths of a second. Points leader Kimi Antonelli recovered to fifth in Azerbaijan after a qualifying crash, though his advantage was trimmed to 66 points. Lewis Hamilton trails by 103 points, while Lando Norris sits 116 points back, with McLaren anticipated to demonstrate high efficiency across Sepang's medium- and high-speed directional changes.

Beyond lateral structural loads, ambient heat, extreme humidity, and the persistent threat of sudden tropical rainstorms will complicate thermal degradation and tyre stint windows throughout the weekend.
