Rangers Injury Update: Youssef Chermiti Faces Knee Assessment
Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti is undergoing medical evaluation following a knee injury sustained during the club's 2-1 defeat to Hibernian. The 22-year-old was substituted and removed from the pitch on a stretcher, departing Ibrox in a protective boot and brace. Manager Derek McInnes confirmed that a scan is scheduled to determine the severity of the ligament or structural damage.
Match Context and Tactical Impact
The loss to Hibernian marks a difficult start for McInnes, who remains winless in his opening three matches. The match sequence unfolded as follows:
- 11th Minute: Hibernian secured a lead via a Josh Campbell penalty. The decision followed a VAR review identifying a foul by Vanja Dragojevic on Jason Kerr.
- First Half: Rangers maintained possession but struggled to penetrate the Hibernian defensive block, resulting in a low-velocity attacking phase.
- Injury Interval: Chermiti was withdrawn before halftime, forcing a tactical adjustment in the final third.
- Second Half: Rangers increased pressure, dominating the final 25 minutes, but conceded a second goal following a deflection.
Operational Status
Rangers currently sit five points behind league leaders Celtic and St Mirren. The club is managing a squad integration phase, with McInnes noting that several players are currently below optimal fitness levels. Regarding Chermiti, the club has previously rejected a reported £22m bid from Galatasaray, signaling his importance to the current attacking structure. The medical staff will finalize the recovery timeline pending the results of the upcoming scan.
