Verstappen Sets Sepang Pace in Practice 1 as Mercedes Debuts Upgrades

Max Verstappen topped the opening practice session at Sepang with a 1:37.520, leading Mercedes' George Russell by three-tenths. High ambient heat and abrasive tarmac triggered severe tyre degradation as teams evaluated significant aerodynamic upgrades.

Verstappen Sets Sepang Pace in Practice 1 as Mercedes Debuts Upgrades

Verstappen Leads Return to Sepang

Max Verstappen set the benchmark time during the opening practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, navigating the high-lateral loads of the Sepang International Circuit to post a session-leading 1:37.520. The effort placed the Red Bull driver three-tenths of a second clear of the field as Formula 1 returned to the venue for the first time since Verstappen's victory there in 2017.

George Russell finished the session second fastest in a heavily revised Mercedes, trailing Verstappen's benchmark after completing baseline runs on an evolving, dusty track surface under high ambient temperatures and humidity.

Mercedes Introduces Key Structural Upgrades

Mercedes arrived at Sepang with its most substantial aerodynamic and mechanical overhaul since late May. The update package on the W17 focuses on localized load management and underbody airflow, featuring:

  • A redesigned floor assembly to optimize ground-effect load distribution.
  • Revised rear suspension geometry.
  • Reprofiled rear corner ducts and aerodynamic elements.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli placed fifth in the second Mercedes, ending the session 0.6 seconds adrift of Russell and a full second behind Verstappen as the team worked through aerodynamic correlation runs.

Thermal Stress and Severe Tyre Degradation

Sepang’s abrasive asphalt and sustained lateral cornering sequences immediately triggered aggressive tyre wear across the field. Late-session long runs on soft compound tyres highlighted high degradation rates, with the Mercedes pit wall informing Russell that telemetry indicated their car was an outlier in terms of surface decay.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies noted that baseline setups remain unsettled across the grid due to low surface grip: "It's early days. We saw the high deg of the Mercedes but everyone is out of the [set-up] window now."

Chasing Pack Off the Pace

Ferrari and McLaren both operated outside the optimal performance window during the initial 60 minutes of running:

  • Ferrari: Charles Leclerc took fourth position, while Lewis Hamilton posted the sixth-fastest time.
  • McLaren: Neither car breached the top 10 on the timing sheets, with Oscar Piastri finishing 11th and Lando Norris slotting into 12th.

Teams now shift focus to refining mechanical balance and managing thermal degradation in Practice 2 ahead of Saturday's qualifying session.
