Russell United States GP pace rubbish as Antonelli dominates

George Russell finished eighth at the United States Grand Prix, 54 seconds behind race-winning Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, and called his own pace "rubbish". A five-second penalty for an opening-lap incident with Oscar Piastri dropped him to eighth, and he spent the final 26 laps stuck behind the McLaren. Antonelli leads by 123 points heading to Mexico.

Russell United States GP: eighth place, 54 seconds back

The Russell United States GP left George Russell eighth and 54 seconds behind his race-winning Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, a margin he called "rubbish" without qualification. The result keeps him mathematically in the championship, but Antonelli's lead stands at 123 points before this weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, where the title can be settled.

Russell had held his grid position of sixth through the opening stint. The race turned at his only pit stop, where a five-second penalty — awarded for leaving the track while battling Oscar Piastri on the first lap and gaining an advantage — dropped him to eighth.

The Piastri stalemate and a lost 26 laps

From there Russell spent the final 26 laps on the tail of Piastri's similarly one-stopping McLaren, unable to find a route past. Dirty air and a matched strategy left him without an obvious lever, and the gap to the front grew rather than shrank.

"The pace was rubbish. That's the long and short of it," Russell told Sky Sports F1. "The five-second [penalty] didn't help things and probably cost me two or three positions but the pace wasn't good enough when it needed to be."

He offered no excuse and no immediate diagnosis. "Just not been quick enough," he said. "I need to try and understand why that is. It's strange when you're so far off. Hopefully there are some answers somewhere but at the moment I don't have them."

Mercedes upgrade and a narrower set-up window

Antonelli's win was his ninth of the season and, in Toto Wolff's assessment, "the best race that he's delivered so far". It was also the first victory for Mercedes' upgraded car, which the team has taken time to understand since the aerodynamic revisions debuted at the start of October.

Mercedes have said the changes narrowed the car's optimum set-up window, which explains the weekend better than any single corner. Wolff was direct about what that cost Russell.

"George just struggled so much. And I believe this is because the operational window of the car is so difficult," Wolff said. "In Q2 he was there and thereabouts. Q3, it didn't work. He said, 'that goes on me'. And today in the race, I don't know, we got stuck behind Piastri, which looks a bit unfair why he didn't get past. It's the same engine, it's the same electric charging and deployment. But I'm going to see him now."

Button: the gap is not a true measure

Sky Sports F1's Jenson Button argued the 54-second figure overstates the deficit, pointing to track position and the penalty rather than raw pace as the compounding factors.

"George has had a lot of tough races but also some great races and that's the thing that's really difficult to understand — how he's able to get the maximum out of that car on some tracks but not at others," Button said. "Austin was difficult as he started so far down. He was in the pack and when you're in the pack, sometimes it's difficult to move forward. You're in the dirty air. You try to do something different with strategy but then you get a five-second penalty which puts you back further. I don't believe his pace is that far off. He's not 54 seconds slower over a race distance."

What Mexico asks of Russell

The championship argument now runs through Antonelli, who can close it in Mexico City. For Russell the weekend is less about the title than about finding a set-up window the upgraded car will accept — the same problem the team has faced since the revisions arrived.

Formula 1 moves to the Mexico City Grand Prix, the second leg of the Americas triple header, this weekend.
