The Starting Grid Tyre Miscalculation
Ferrari compromised its race start at the Bahrain Grand Prix—hosted at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia—by outfitting both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc with soft compound slick tyres on a wet track surface. While 14 of the 22 starters, including pole-sitter and race winner Max Verstappen and third-place starter Kimi Antonelli, selected intermediate tyres, Ferrari gambled on an immediate crossover to dry conditions.
The mechanical penalty was instantaneous. Without tread channels to displace standing water, the slick tyres failed to generate operating temperature and surface friction, sending the slick-shod group over a minute adrift of the race leaders in the opening laps. Hamilton, who lined up second on the grid, plummeted through the field to 18th as lateral grip evaporated through Sepang's high-load corners.
The Lap 5 Strategic Override
As the deficit widened, Ferrari's pit wall instructed Hamilton to pit on lap five to fit intermediate tyres. Hamilton rejected the call from the cockpit, calculating that entering the pit lane after already losing substantial time would solidify the deficit rather than mitigate it.

By electing to absorb the time loss and hold the soft slick compound on track until the asphalt naturally dried toward the slicks' operating window, Hamilton kept his stint strategy intact. The decision shifted from a severe deficit into a viable baseline when a Safety Car period—triggered by Valtteri Bottas spinning his Cadillac into the gravel—compressed the field and neutralized the leaders' time advantage.
Chassis Recovery and Team Response
Once track temperatures and drying lines aligned with the slick compound's grip threshold, Hamilton extracted competitive pace from the chassis to complete an overtaking charge back onto the podium in third position. Leclerc, who pitted early for intermediates and required a front wing change following first-lap contact, recovered to finish fourth.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur defended the operational difficulty of reading the circuit from the pit lane during weather transitions, noting that while the team chose the incorrect starting compound, the subsequent pace allowed both cars to salvage third and fourth places.
