Lewis Hamilton Eyes Monza Pole as Antonelli Penalty Reshapes Italian GP Standings Fight

Ferrari Upgrades Put Hamilton and Leclerc in Pole Contention

Lewis Hamilton has targeted what he describes as a "dream" pole position at Monza after Friday practice indicated Ferrari's new engine upgrade has brought the team into direct contention for the front row at the Italian Grand Prix.

Ferrari showed immediate pace across Friday's running. Charles Leclerc led a Scuderia one-two ahead of Hamilton in opening practice before Mercedes' George Russell went fastest in Practice Two. Leclerc finished that second session in second, while Hamilton was fifth behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli and McLaren's Lando Norris. With fresh power unit components delivering straight-line speed to match their existing cornering stability, Ferrari enters qualifying with genuine leverage at their home circuit.

"It's going to be tight, it's very close," Hamilton said. "We're up against the McLarens and the Mercedes, they are very, very competitive. Every weekend the Mercedes is just really, really quick. It'll be tough, for sure, but we need to knuckle down tonight and see if we can pull something out."

Asked about securing pole in front of the Monza grandstands, Hamilton added: "That's the dream, the ultimate dream. Whether or not we can is the big, big question. And that's going to take a lot of work tonight to try to figure out if we've gone wrong anywhere and if there's any places we can improve."

Championship Standings and Antonelli's Grid Penalty

The qualifying session carries significant implications for the Drivers' Championship table. Kimi Antonelli currently leads the standings by 59 points over both Russell and Hamilton, with Norris sitting fourth, 83 points adrift.

However, Antonelli will not factor into the front of Sunday's starting grid. Mercedes elected to take engine penalties for exceeding power unit component allocations at Monza, calculating that the circuit's long straights and heavy braking zones offer the best opportunity on the remaining calendar to recover positions from the back of the field.

That penalty hands Ferrari a strategic two-versus-one advantage over Mercedes at the sharp end of the grid, leaving Russell as the sole Mercedes driver fighting Leclerc and Hamilton for prime grid position.

"Ferrari definitely took a step forward with a new engine and now the speeds are the same," Antonelli said after focusing on long-run data during Friday practice. "We know how good their car is into the corners so, for sure, it's going to be a tight fight for pole tomorrow."

McLaren Struggles Disrupt Norris's Title Momentum

While Ferrari and Mercedes contested the top spots on Friday, McLaren struggled to find mechanical balance around the low-downforce Monza layout. Norris entered the weekend following consecutive wins in Hungary and the Netherlands, but the MCL38 failed to replicate that rhythm on the Italian circuit's high-speed asphalt.

I definitely don't feel we are in the fight for pole at all but we need to focus on getting a decent result."
