Briatore Weighs Action as Colapinto Crash Deals Double Blow to Alpine in Baku

Turn 1 Lock-Up Triggers Triple DNF

Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore confirmed the team will take time to reflect on a "course of action" after a restart error by Franco Colapinto eliminated both Alpine entries and McLaren's Lando Norris at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The incident unfolded during the first Safety Car restart into Baku’s heavy-braking Turn 1. Attempting an overtake from 10th position down the inside line, Colapinto braked well past the threshold on cold tyres, locking the front axle and losing directional control. The resulting trajectory sent his car directly into the sidepod of team-mate Pierre Gasly, who was then deflected across into Norris on the outside. The load transfer and subsequent impact forced all three cars into immediate retirement.

Championship Impact and Structural Cost

Prior to the collision, Gasly was holding seventh position, putting Alpine on track for a solid haul of championship points. The dual retirement cost the Enstone outfit a net seven points on the track, which proved immediately costly in the midfield standings.

With both Alpines and Norris out of contention, Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad progressed through the order to claim seventh place. That result extended Racing Bulls' advantage over Alpine in the fight for fifth in the Constructors' Championship to 15 points with eight scheduled rounds remaining.

Stewards Issue Grid Drop Amid Paddock Debate

Briatore labeled the move "very poor" given the race context and the loss of critical points, though he acknowledged Colapinto took full responsibility for the misjudgment.

The FIA stewards assigned full blame to Colapinto for missing the deceleration point and overshooting the apex off the racing line. Because Colapinto retired from the race and could not serve the standard 10-second time penalty, the sanction was converted into a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming round at Sepang.

The severity of the error sparked debate across the pit lane:

  • McLaren's Stance: Lando Norris called for a one-race ban for such incidents, while team principal Andrea Stella emphasized the need for common sense and circuit-specific prudence on high-risk street venues.
  • Driver Consensus: Race winner George Russell, Max Verstappen, and third-place finisher Isack Hadjar pushed back against calls for a suspension, citing the extreme difficulty of maintaining tyre thermal thresholds behind a slow Safety Car and the severe penalty of minor lock-ups off the rubbered line.

Formula 1 travels next to the Sepang International Circuit, where Colapinto will serve his five-place grid penalty.
