Wiegman contract extension keeps England coach through Euro 2029

Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension as England Women head coach, running through the end of Euro 2029 and replacing a deal that expired after the 2027 World Cup. The extension also covers the 2027 Nations League, which doubles as Olympic qualifying, while England must first beat Ukraine over two legs in December to reach the World Cup in Brazil.

Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension as England Women head coach, keeping her in the post through the end of Euro 2029. The Wiegman contract extension replaces a deal that was due to expire at the end of the 2027 World Cup. She is 56.

What the Wiegman contract extension covers

The new terms take her tenure to eight years from her first match in charge in 2021. The deal also encompasses the 2027 Nations League, which serves as the qualifying tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Two tournament cycles sit inside the extension: the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, subject to qualification, and Euro 2029. The FA framed the agreement as cover for "the next two tournaments."

England's record under Wiegman

  1. 2021 — first match in charge.
  2. Euro 2022 — England's first major trophy.
  3. 2023 World Cup — runners-up, beaten in the final by Spain.
  4. Three years after Euro 2022 — a successful defence of the European title.
  5. Additional silverware — two Arnold Clark Cups and the first Women's Finalissima, against Brazil.
  6. Individual award — voted Best FIFA Women's Coach for a record-extending fifth time last year.

Wiegman had already won the 2017 European Championship with her native Netherlands before taking the England job. The extension gives her the chance to guide England to a third consecutive European title.

Wiegman's statement

"I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football. Working for a world-class organisation like The FA, and alongside so many people dedicated to winning England teams and the growth of our game, excites me every day."

She thanked FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, chair Debbie Hewitt and the FA Board for backing her staff and players, and said her main concern is the World Cup and confirming England's place in Brazil.

Bullingham said: "Sarina is an incredible coach, with an unparalleled record in major tournaments and I am so happy to continue to work with her for the next EURO cycle." FA chief football officer Dan Ashworth described her as an elite coach who has "won consistently while operating at the highest tactical level."

Ukraine play-off and the route to Brazil

England meet Ukraine over two legs in the final play-off round in December. The winners of the tie progress to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Wiegman said the squad has "an important job to do to confirm our place in Brazil."

England did not qualify automatically for the tournament, a result that sat alongside a recent 4-0 defeat to Spain in the criticism directed at the team over the past 12 months.

Scrutiny before the announcement

Sky Sports' Laura Hunter said the news comes as something of a surprise, given the assumption that Wiegman would leave after next summer's World Cup. Hunter noted that England have reached the final of every tournament under her charge, but have faced more scrutiny over what many see as a stagnation of the team's development.

Hunter also pointed to 20-year-old Lexi Potter, who featured during the most recent international window, as evidence of young talent coming through the ranks.

What to watch next

The December play-off against Ukraine is the immediate checkpoint: qualification for Brazil 2027 sits inside the new deal, and so does the 2027 Nations League route to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Beyond that, Euro 2029 marks the end point of the extension.
