Sir Alex Ferguson Details Fear Behind 2018 Old Trafford Return Following Brain Haemorrhage

The Vulnerability Behind a Historic Return

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he was "terrified" ahead of his return to Old Trafford in September 2018, following emergency surgery for a life-threatening brain haemorrhage suffered earlier that year.

Ferguson, the most successful manager in English football history, was admitted to intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital in May 2018. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, the 84-year-old explained that the uncertainty surrounding his reception and physical vulnerability made his initial reappearance at the stadium an intimidating ordeal.

"I was terrified. I wish I could say I was comfortable. I wasn't," Ferguson said. "I didn't know what the reaction was going to be. Then they make the announcement and then of course there was a loud applause. My wife was with me, and she was nearly crying."

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Ferguson's return came less than four months after his emergency operation, attending Manchester United's 1-1 Premier League draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The former manager previously revealed fears of permanent cognitive and vocal damage, detailing the rehabilitation required to restore his speech.

  • Emergency Admission: Underwent critical brain surgery in May 2018.
  • Return Fixture: Appeared in the directors' box for Manchester United vs. Wolves in September 2018.
  • Speech Therapy: Regained vocal function through cognitive exercises, including writing lists of animals, birds, and rivers.

"I had lost my voice; I couldn't speak. That was a frightening moment," Ferguson noted. "I remember my grandsons coming to see me and I had lost my voice. Then they brought in a therapist and she started doing things like asking me to write down the names of birds, names of animals, names of rivers. That way my voice came back."

Current Health and Old Trafford Presence

Now 84, Ferguson remains a consistent presence in the stands during Manchester United fixtures. Despite the severity of his 2018 health crisis, he confirmed that his day-to-day condition remains strong, stating: "I'm feeling quite good despite small injuries." His enduring connection to Old Trafford continues to serve as a foundational touchstone for the club's modern identity.
