Pochettino and Rival Managers React to Reported Verdict in Manchester City Financial Case

Pochettino Warns of Lasting Damage to Premier League Credibility

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has stated that English football endured a "period of deception" if Manchester City are proven to have breached Premier League financial regulations. The comments follow reports that an independent tribunal has reached its decisions regarding the 115 charges brought against the reigning champions, with the matter now advancing toward an appeal process.

Speaking to The Guardian, Pochettino reflected on his tenure in England—which included spells managing Southampton (2013–2014), Tottenham (2014–2019), and Chelsea (2023–2024)—arguing that no retrospective sporting sanction can fully undo the distortion of competition during that era.

"At the end of the day, we went through something where sporting fairness didn't exist, so how do you repair everything that was damaged because of that? If it's true… we've lived through a period of deception. Whatever punishment, it's impossible to turn back time."

Tony Pulis and Stoke City's 2011 FA Cup Grievance

Pochettino's sentiments were echoed by former Stoke City manager Tony Pulis, who led Stoke against Manchester City in the 2011 FA Cup final—the fixture that yielded City's first major trophy in 35 years. Writing in his BBC Sport column, Pulis questioned the lasting sporting legacy of that defeat in light of the tribunal reports.

"When do we get our FA Cup?" Pulis wrote. "While the process is far from over because Manchester City are expected to appeal, I have to say this verdict and the whole situation has left a very sour taste in my mouth... I don't seriously believe any other trophies and titles will be handed back over either. A points deduction and a massive fine feels far more likely. But I still feel cheated." Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand publicly endorsed Pulis's reaction on social media.

Manchester City's Defense and Legal Outlook

Manchester City maintain a firm denial of all alleged wrongdoing. Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has reiterated confidence that the club will establish its innocence, while chief executive Ferran Soriano previously indicated to fellow club executives that the legal proceedings could span multiple years before reaching finality.

According to Sky Sports News, rival Premier League clubs may explore avenues for financial compensation should the charges be formally upheld following the resolution of expected appeals.
