Ferrari Targets Execution and Power Unit Gains
As the 2026 Formula 1 season enters its summer break, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has identified the critical areas where the Scuderia must sharpen its performance to keep Lewis Hamilton in the hunt for an eighth world title. Hamilton currently sits second in the drivers' standings, trailing Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by 50 points.
While Hamilton has maintained a consistent campaign, Vasseur admits that Mercedes has held a performance edge for much of the year. Ferrari’s challenge is twofold: closing the 72-point gap in the constructors' championship and providing Hamilton with the machinery to bridge the deficit to Antonelli.
The Strategy for the Second Half
Vasseur highlighted "execution" as the primary lesson from the Hungarian Grand Prix, where strategic errors cost Hamilton a potential podium finish. Despite this, Vasseur remains optimistic about the team's trajectory, noting that Ferrari has outscored Mercedes in the last four or five races since the Spanish Grand Prix.
The technical focus for the remainder of the season involves two distinct paths:
- Power Unit Development: Vasseur acknowledged that the engine remains a bottleneck. While Ferrari has already utilized performance-balancing measures to upgrade the power unit, further improvements are planned, though the "inertia" of engine development is slower than chassis adjustments.
- Chassis Evolution: Unlike McLaren’s philosophy of introducing large, singular upgrade packages, Ferrari continues to bring smaller, incremental updates to every race. Vasseur insists this steady momentum is vital to maintaining pace over the final 12 races.
