Three-Car Chain Reaction Eliminates Norris and Alpines in Baku
Lando Norris has called on the FIA to enforce race bans for major driving errors following a three-car collision that eliminated him and both Alpine drivers during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The incident occurred into Turn 1 during a Lap 36 Safety Car restart, instantly erasing three top-10 contenders from the race.
The sequence began when Franco Colapinto carried excessive kinetic energy into the primary braking zone. Struggling with reduced surface friction and cold brake assemblies following the neutralization period, the Alpine driver locked up his wheels and collided with the flank of his teammate, Pierre Gasly. The lateral impact transferred directly across the track, launching Gasly’s car into the outside flank of Norris’ McLaren and pitching Norris into the exterior barriers. All three machines suffered critical structural damage and retired on the spot.
Norris and Colapinto Respond to Turn 1 Incident
At the time of the collision, the trio had been running in point-scoring positions, with Gasly occupying seventh, Norris in eighth, and Colapinto in 10th. The simultaneous elimination dealt a severe blow to both McLaren and Alpine's points tallies.

Following the retirement, a frustrated Norris directed sharp criticism toward driving standards and stewarding penalties:
“At the end of the day, I just got taken out. Just some drivers that shouldn't be in Formula 1, to be honest. I've not seen it, but if you cause a crash in a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban. I just got taken out. And the FIA should be stricter by starting to hand out bans for this kind of stuff.”
Colapinto accepted total responsibility for misjudging the stopping distances and thermal state of his machinery on the restart:
“Just to all the team, not only to Pierre, but it's just a big mistake. So a big, big sorry to Pierre, to everyone in the factory that has been working really hard. We were with both cars in the points so very sad and disappointed. Big, big sorry, it's a big mistake. Just cold brakes, cold tyres and locked up and completely out of control. Unfortunately, I also took Pierre out and Lando of course but big sorry to both of them.”
What Comes Next
The incident places immediate focus on the FIA stewards regarding restart conduct and potential disciplinary sanctions. With Alpine absorbing significant repair costs across two damaged chassis and McLaren losing valuable constructors' points, the grid now shifts preparation toward the upcoming round on the Formula 1 calendar.
