Lewis Hamilton Questions Ferrari Qualifying Strategy After Baku Q3 Plan Shift

Lewis Hamilton qualified sixth for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Ferrari shifted its Q3 approach, leaving him without a slipstream on Baku's long main straight. While Charles Leclerc captured a front-row start in second behind pole-sitter George Russell, Hamilton warned that overtaking Mercedes-powered cars will prove difficult under race conditions.

Lewis Hamilton Questions Ferrari Qualifying Strategy After Baku Q3 Plan Shift

Baku Qualifying Breakdown: The Tow Deficit and Ferrari's Single-Run Strategy

Lewis Hamilton voiced sharp frustration with Scuderia Ferrari's execution during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, revealing that the team altered its operational plan ahead of the decisive Q3 session. Hamilton finished sixth on the grid in Baku, leaving him tucked behind three Mercedes-powered rivals on a circuit defined by a punishing, full-throttle 2.2-kilometer straight (where Baku's stark glass-and-steel modernism abuts the medieval fortress walls). While Mercedes driver George Russell claimed pole position by a substantial eight-tenths margin, Ferrari locked down the other front-row slot with Charles Leclerc in second.

The central tactical split came down to run plans and aerodynamic slipstreams. While rival outfits Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull elected to complete two distinct runs during the final shootout, Ferrari opted for a single, multi-lap sequence late in the session. Because it was Hamilton's turn in the intra-team garage rotation to lead the cars out of the pit lane, the seven-time world champion cut the air for Leclerc without receiving a tow ahead of himself, severely compromising his straight-line velocity down the main straight.

Mechanical Realities and Straight-Line Deficits

In the post-session debrief amid the lingering scent of hot carbon brake dust and race fuel, Hamilton outlined the direct performance cost of the adjusted Q3 schedule:

"Q1 and Q2 were pretty ok. At least Q1 was pretty decent, Q2 we struggled a little bit more, and then as we went into Q3 they changed the plan. Instead of doing two runs we ended up waiting and then because I was ahead of Charles, I had nobody ahead of me on a tow so that was worth quite a chunk in itself. But, either way, we couldn't compete with the Mercedes. They are just outright so much quicker on the straights than us."

Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur explained that synchronizing traffic with other garages proved complex due to varied run profiles across the field. Vasseur also noted that Hamilton brushed the perimeter wall during his initial exploratory lap in Q3, complicating his mechanical baseline before recovering to sixth on his final push lap.

Grid Position and Race Pace Implications

Ferrari enters Saturday's Grand Prix balancing two very different race realities:

  • Charles Leclerc (P2): Benefited from Hamilton's tow to secure Ferrari's first front-row start since the Hungarian Grand Prix in July. Despite acknowledging the eight-tenths gap to Russell's dominant baseline, Leclerc noted that the car's high-fuel race pace in practice showed far greater parity than its single-lap trim.
  • Lewis Hamilton (P6): Faces a difficult recovery drive behind Russell, Oscar Piastri, and Lando Norris. With Mercedes power units occupying three of the five spots ahead of him, overtaking on Baku's long drag will demand aggressive energy deployment and precise mechanical grip out of the tight castle section.
  • Tyre Degradation Outlook: Pirelli compounds are exhibiting minimal degradation around the Baku street circuit. With tyre wear low, undercut strategies will be blunted, placing maximum premium on clean launch execution and straight-line top speed.
