Red Bull Extension Resolves Paddock Speculation
George Russell stated that his position at Mercedes remained structurally secure throughout months of external market speculation, following Red Bull's confirmation that Max Verstappen has signed a contract extension keeping him with the team through 2030.
Verstappen had been repeatedly linked with potential moves across the paddock since Lewis Hamilton announced his departure for Ferrari in February 2024. While Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff initially explored avenues to bring the four-time world champion to Brackley, subsequent speculation questioned Russell's seat stability alongside teammate Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the Drivers' Championship.
Russell and Norris Address Driver Market Stability
Speaking ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Russell downplayed the tension surrounding negotiations, framing the dialogue as routine operational vetting rather than an active displacement risk.
"It was always very clear from within Mercedes what the reality was over these past couple of years," Russell said. "Maybe those conversations were slightly more public than the conversations his team were having with the likes of McLaren, or Ferrari, or whoever else it may have been. But my seat never felt under threat, and I felt 100 per cent security with Toto and the team, and that obviously now continues."
Reigning world champion Lando Norris also reflected on earlier talks between McLaren and Verstappen's management, an option underscored by Red Bull race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase's agreed move to the Woking-based outfit. Norris confirmed McLaren's current lineup remains stable alongside Oscar Piastri.
"I welcome anyone to be my team-mate," Norris noted. "Of course, a guy who has won as many world championships as he has, a guy who is as talented as him would always be cool to have as a team-mate one day. But I know Oscar's my team-mate for still quite a while yet, I know nothing is changing."
Next on the Calendar
With long-term contracts now locking down key seats at Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes, the Formula 1 grid shifts focus back to on-track execution. The season resumes at Circuit Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint weekend, beginning with opening practice and Sprint Qualifying on Friday.
