Fernando Alonso Weighs F1 Future as FIA Explores Honda Engine Concessions

Uncertainty Mounts Over Alonso's 2027 Aston Martin Seat

Fernando Alonso's future on the Formula 1 grid remains unresolved as the two-time world champion evaluates whether to extend his stay with Aston Martin into 2027 or step away from active driving. The 45-year-old Spaniard has registered points finishes just twice this season under the 2026 technical regulations, with the Aston Martin-Honda package struggling to match front-running pace.

Alonso's current contract expires at the end of the season. Addressing his plans during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend in Madrid, he confirmed that any official decision regarding a renewal or transition into an off-track role will not arrive immediately.

"It's a matter of understanding what the rules from next year will have an impact or not on the racing and on the driving side of things," Alonso said. "The current cars, as I said many times, are not the best cars to drive and to enjoy. But next year there is a step in the right direction, hopefully. At the same time, I need to think what is the best programme for next year and sit with the team. Behind the wheel or in another role, where I will be helping the most, that will be the most important thing to decide together."

FIA Considers Regulatory Relief for Honda

In response to Aston Martin's competitive deficit, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem indicated a willingness to support powertrain parity by reviewing development regulations for Honda. Ben Sulayem met with Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll in Madrid to discuss technical remedies.

"There is no way we can allow Fernando to leave—Alonso, a great champion—just because of the circumstances," Ben Sulayem stated. "He has to be successful and then he leaves whenever he wants, not because he was forced to leave because of the performance."

The governing body is evaluating adjustments through the Power Unit Advisory Committee. Potential measures include revising the Additional Development Upgrades Opportunities (ADUO) framework beyond pure Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) parameters. Honda has already deployed one of its two allocated upgrade opportunities this season, holds two more for 2027, and received an additional £14 million development allowance.

Rival Teams Receptive to Catch-Up Adjustments

Key rivals have voiced measured support for adjusting development allowances to ensure competitive balance across engine manufacturers. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies both indicated an openness to refining the ADUO structure.

"The ADUO in that case was designed as a catch-up mechanism and that formula was unlocked for Honda, and they need more," Wolff said. "We want to have all of these top constructors in the sport. We want them to be competitive and successful."

Mekies echoed that collaborative stance: "As stakeholders of the sport, if there is a situation that needs to be fixed or needs to be supported, we normally find solutions. I'm sure that we will at some stage sit down and discuss the future of the ADUO regulations."

Aston Martin Holds No Immediate Contingency Plan

Aston Martin trackside officer Mike Krack reiterated that the Silverstone-based team is fully committed to retaining Alonso and is not pursuing alternative drivers for 2027.

"We were always clear the team wants to continue," Krack said. "We need to respect what Fernando's thoughts are. We need to respect the time he wants to take... I will also not speak about any Plan B. We very much hope that Fernando will continue."

With driver markets largely settled across top operations—including locked seats at Red Bull, Ferrari, and Williams—Aston Martin's options would be constrained if Alonso opts for retirement or alternative motorsport programmes, such as a return to the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
