F1 Expands Sprint Schedule to 10 Rounds in 2027
Formula 1 has confirmed its 2027 race calendar, maintaining a 24-round championship while expanding the Sprint format to 10 race weekends—an increase from the six short-form events held in each of the past four seasons. The schedule is bookended by Sprint weekends, opening in Bahrain from March 12–14 and concluding at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi from December 10–12.
The 10 Sprint events are evenly distributed between existing hosts and five debut circuits for the format:
- Returning Sprint Hosts: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Montreal), Silverstone, Monza, Interlagos (São Paulo), and Lusail International Circuit (Qatar).
- New Sprint Additions: Bahrain International Circuit (Sakhir), Albert Park (Melbourne), Suzuka Circuit, Circuit de Monaco, and Yas Marina Circuit (Abu Dhabi).
The operational framework of the Sprint weekend remains unaltered. Drivers contest a single 60-minute practice session on Friday before entering Sprint Qualifying, followed by a 100km race on Saturday morning, standard Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday afternoon, and the full Grand Prix on Sunday. Points remain reserved for the top eight finishers in the Sprint.

Why Monaco Received a Sprint Race
The decision to host a Sprint around the 3.337km streets of Monte Carlo marks a fundamental shift for a circuit historically defined by severe aerodynamic dirty-air penalties and a lack of on-track overtaking. The structural value of the format in Monaco relies entirely on time-trial precision rather than wheel-to-wheel passing.
By reducing practice running to a single hour, engineering teams face acute setup compromises. In Monaco, suspension compliance, ride-height optimization over lateral cambers, and mechanical grip demand extensive baseline data. With only 60 minutes before Parc Fermé conditions lock in aerodynamic trim and roll stiffness, the risk of sub-optimal mechanical balance increases.
Critically, the addition of a Sprint introduces two high-commitment qualifying sessions across the weekend—Sprint Qualifying on Friday and Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday. Because track position around the Principality dictates roughly 80 percent of race outcomes under standard tire degradation intervals, both qualifying sessions will carry critical weight for overall weekend scoring.
Calendar Shifts: Portimão and Istanbul Return
Alongside format changes, the 2027 calendar introduces several venue adjustments within the 24-race limit:
- Returning Venues: The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão returns to the schedule in June, while Intercity Istanbul Park rejoins the championship in early October following a five-week summer break.
- Exits and Rotations: The Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort drops off the calendar following the conclusion of its contract. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya transitions into a biennial rotation model, stepping aside for 2027 before an expected return in 2028.
- Pre-Season Testing: To offset the setup volatility of opening the season with a Sprint event in Sakhir, Bahrain will host four days of official pre-season testing from February 24–27, granting teams an extra testing day compared to standard non-regulation-change cycles.
Middle Eastern Rounds and Logistics
Formula 1 has retained all four of its Middle Eastern events for 2027 (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi). For the closing stages of the 2026 campaign, the championship continues to monitor regional developments regarding scheduled races in Lusail and Yas Marina, with Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari (Imola) understood to serve as a contingency venue if needed.
