Antonelli F1 title permutations for Mexico City Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli needs two points at the Mexico City Grand Prix to become Formula 1's youngest world champion at 20. He leads George Russell by 123 points and Lewis Hamilton by 124, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri already eliminated. Mercedes also have a first mathematical shot at the constructors' title, though that requires a 39-point swing over Ferrari in one weekend.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli could not close out the championship in Austin, at the first race where it became mathematically possible. He won the United States Grand Prix anyway, and the arithmetic now points hard at Mexico City.

The Mercedes driver leads team-mate George Russell by 123 points and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by 124. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are officially out of contention. Only Russell and Hamilton can still stop Antonelli from becoming Formula 1's youngest world champion at 20 years old.

Two points. That is the entire requirement at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Sunday. Score two and the title is his, whatever anyone else does in front of or behind him.

There is a safety net if the result goes sideways. Antonelli is champion in Mexico as long as Russell does not outscore him by 24 points and Hamilton does not outscore him by 25.

The reason Austin was not enough is simple arithmetic. Five rounds remain including Mexico, and 125 points are still on the table, so a 123-point lead cannot yet be mathematically closed off. After Sunday, only four races are left — Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi — with a maximum of 100 points across them.

That is why the pressure has shifted onto the chasing pair rather than the leader. Antonelli needs a clean Sunday, not a dominant one.

The arithmetic stacked against Russell and Hamilton

The route left for the chasing pair is narrow and mechanical. One of them would have to win all five remaining races and Antonelli would have to fail to score two points across the same stretch.

A win is worth 25 points. So a single retirement for Antonelli, with Russell taking victory, would swing the gap by more than the 24-point cushion he holds over his team-mate. That is the shape of the only realistic path still open.

Everything else is noise: grid penalties, safety cars, a slow pit stop. Two points is a low bar, and low bars are the ones that get missed when a season is being closed out.

Mercedes chase the constructors' title in Mexico

Mercedes-AMG Petronas also have a first mathematical chance to clinch the Constructors' Championship on Sunday, and it is a far taller order than Antonelli's.

They lead Scuderia Ferrari by 133 points, with 172 points still to play for after Mexico. To seal it in Mexico City they would need to outscore Ferrari by 39 points in a single weekend.

That combination requires Antonelli or Russell to win the Grand Prix, the other Mercedes to finish second or third, and a disastrous afternoon for both Scuderia Ferrari drivers. The realistic target is Sao Paulo a week later, where Mercedes would need to leave Interlagos 129 points clear — four fewer than the current gap.

Ferrari have outscored Mercedes at each of the last three race weekends. That trend, more than the maths, is what the Mercedes pit wall will be watching through the hot brake dust and burnt rubber of Sunday afternoon.

Sao Paulo and the races that follow

Mexico City is the second leg of the Americas triple header. If the drivers' title survives Sunday, the next stop is Interlagos, then Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

For Antonelli the remaining risk is not arithmetic but hardware: a car that stops, a first-lap tangle, a grid penalty carried over. The championship is his to lose on points, and almost impossible to lose on pace.

For Russell and Hamilton, the weekend is about keeping a mathematical season alive for one more race. Anything less and the countdown ends in Mexico.
